Symptoms of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in Teenage Girls
One of the most common reproductive diseases women suffer from is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It appears when women hit the childbearing or puberty age. It has been found that nearly 5% to 10% of teenagers are diagnosed with this disease. What is polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)? The occurrence of hormonal imbalance causing irregular periods, acne, unwanted growth of hair, etc is called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The term also refers to the formation of small cysts causing an increase in ovarian size. These cysts or follicles develop but do not release eggs. It also causes excessive thickening of the ovarian wall. It is not cancerous and does not any invasive procedure to remove. Symptoms to diagnose PCOS In some cases, normal ovaries also show such symptoms thus indicating the presence of PCOS in a teenage patient. Here are the symptoms that will help you to decide and seek medical attention.
- Irregular periods
Irregularity in the occurrence of periods can indicate PCOS. It might happen in a few months interval. A patient can also witness no periods at all or it can happen too frequently.
- Hirsutism
Unnatural hair growth on the face and in different parts of a woman’s body can also indicate an abnormal level of hormones.
- Acne
Frequent skin eruptions on the facial region or acne formation can also indicate abnormal hormonal levels.
- Unnatural weight gain
Overweight or obesity can also indicate PCOS. If an individual is unable to lose weight, it can be considered a sign of PCOS.
- Acanthosis Nigricans
The formation of dark skin patches at the backside of neck areas and in other parts can also signify hormonal imbalance.
- Lack of ovulation leading to impaired fertility
As mentioned earlier, improper menstruation will lead to impaired fertility as ova will not be released on a regular basis due to the formation of follicles in ovaries. When to seek medical attention? If your daughter is suffering from any two or more symptoms mentioned above, she needs to be checked by a gynecologist. On seeking medical attention, it will be clear whether a patient is suffering from PCOS or not and proper treatment will be started. It will be beneficial if a log is maintained regarding the menstrual cycles before and during the treatment is going on. Find a gynecologist specialized in adolescent cases so that you can assure a better diagnosis due to experience.
